Dear readers,
Thank you for your ongoing interest in Mono County COVID-19 news and updates. In the early COVID days I was looking for community information that I couldn’t find. Suddenly unemployed with no freelance work, I hurled myself into local reporting — unpaid, as a community service.
Readership continues to grow, thanks to you, so today I launched a newsletter. Now you can get a weekly round-up of reporting delivered directly to your inbox. It’s still free.
The Mono County Weekly newsletter is a round-up of community news reported by me, Monica Prelle, a Mammoth Lakes-based independent journalist.
Check out the first issue: April 27: Mono County Weekly.
And then sign up to get a free subscription and be a part of an informed community of people who live in, or care about, California’s Eastern Sierra. Never miss an update, spend less time on social media.
If you like what you read, please consider sharing with people who care about the region. Your support is essential to growing the newsletter’s readership and keeping independent local journalism going.
Be kind, stay well.
— Monica
About Monica Prelle
In the best of times, I am a freelance journalist writing about the outdoors, adventure, travel and running for national and regional publications. Currently, I am reporting on COVID-19 in Mono County, California. You can expect timely, objective reporting and longer in-depth special reports — information that is important to the health and well-being of our Eastern Sierra community.
Over the years, my writing has appeared in Adventure Journal, Afar, Backpacker, Bicycling, Climbing, The Guardian, Outside Online, REI Co-op Journal, Runner’s World, Sierra, SKI, and VICE Sports among others.
In 2018 I was a visiting journalism professor at Northern Michigan University and in 2017 I was a Carlyle Norman scholar in the Banff Centre’s Mountain Wilderness Writing program. I have a master’s degree in journalism from Harvard University.
My work has won numerous awards including Best Magazine Feature 2019 from the Outdoor Writers Association of California, the Silver Prize for Travel Profile 2016 from the North American Travel Journalists Association, and the Bodie McDowell Scholarship from the Outdoor Writers Association of America in 2014.
After nearly 20 years, Mammoth Lakes, California is still home.
