About Monica Prelle
In the best of times, I am a freelance journalist writing about the outdoors, adventure, travel and running for national and regional publications. Currently, I am reporting on COVID-19 in Mono County, California. You can expect timely, objective reporting and longer in-depth special reports—information that is important to the health and well-being of our Eastern Sierra community.
Over the years, my writing has appeared in Adventure Journal, Afar, Backpacker, Bicycling, Climbing, The Guardian, Outside Online, REI Co-op Journal, Runner’s World, Sierra, SKI, and VICE Sports among others.
In 2018 I was a visiting journalism professor at Northern Michigan University and in 2017 I was a Carlyle Norman scholar in the Banff Centre’s Mountain Wilderness Writing program. I have a master’s degree in journalism from Harvard University.
My work has won numerous awards including Best Magazine Feature 2019 from the Outdoor Writers Association of California, the Silver Prize for Travel Profile 2016 from the North American Travel Journalists Association, and the Bodie McDowell Scholarship from the Outdoor Writers Association of America in 2014.
After nearly 20 years, Mammoth Lakes, California is still home.
